Sometimes in life a journey will lead you in unexpected directions, and this couldn't be further from the truth for me. I have a tendency to veer off the main road just to see what's out there, and I never find myself disappointed. While driving through Utah, the end of my destination about a day away, I stumbled upon truly one of the most spectacular places one could ever see. It was a late winter day where storms still rushed across the terrain and snow was still falling at higher elevations. Mother Nature was in a mood where she allowed only the occasional ray of sunlight through the thick layers of clouds that hung from the sky above me. But I will never forget driving along 163 when suddenly appearing before me was the sprawling landscape littered with the rock formations of the Valley of the Gods. When I got out of the car I just stood there in amazement as I looked around me at the sandstone buttes that years of erosion have created. Not a whistle, roar or a howl the winds rushed through the valley and made this sound that was equally amazing to the visuals before me. When I had planned out this trip to The Grand Canyon I never researched more than what I was going to need to the backpacking trip in my plans. This was certainly a more than welcome surprise.
